Every Child Is A Hero

An AI platform that prints a child into their own comic book.

Story input through to printed comic

The Project

A parent enters their childs name, age, favourite characters and the values they want the story to carry. AI writes and illustrates a comic in which that child is the hero. It gets printed and posted to them.

The brief was the whole platform: story input, AI generation, preview, checkout and fulfilment. Design and development in one team, from an empty repository to a live storefront.

01

Objectives

Confidence has to be built from the inputs rather than the output showing the parent enough of the generation to believe in it, without giving away the keepsake before it arrives in the post.

  • Make a four-field form read as the start of a gift, not data entry
  • Show enough of the generation to earn a purchase without spoiling it
  • Carry a one-of-one physical object from checkout through to fulfilment
  • Ship a real storefront rather than a waitlist
02

Challenges

Every e-commerce convention assumes the product exists before the checkout. Here it does not. That inverts the entire flow.

  • The thing being bought does not exist at the moment the parent decides to buy it
  • There is no photograph of the finished book, because it is about their child and has not been written yet
  • AI generation is not instant, so the wait is part of the experience whether it is designed or not
  • Every order is unique and physically printed you cannot reprint the wrong childs comic and call it a rounding error

Solutions

An AI-native commerce flow not a storefront with an AI feature bolted on.

  • The input designed as anticipation: name, age, favourite characters, values
  • Latency turned into narrative, because the story being written is a better story than please wait
  • Django holding generation state, preview, order records and print fulfilment consistent
  • A playful Tailwind surface built for childrens publishing over a serious backend

Results

A live storefront where the generated artefact is the product rather than a feature attached to one an active engagement, still shipping new surface.
